If you do one thing to improve your AI visibility, add structured data to your website. JSON-LD schema markup is the machine-readable layer that tells AI engines exactly what your business does, where it is, and what services you offer.

Most local businesses have zero schema markup. Adding it puts you ahead of the majority of your competitors immediately.

What is structured data?

Structured data is a standardized format (JSON-LD) that you embed in your website's HTML. It does not change how your page looks to human visitors. It adds a machine-readable description that AI engines can parse directly, without having to interpret your design or copy.

Think of it as a business card that AI can read. Your website is the storefront for humans. Structured data is the storefront for machines.

The schemas that matter most

For local businesses, four schema types have the most impact on AI visibility:

  1. LocalBusiness - Your business name, address, phone, hours, service area, and category. This is the foundation. Every local business should have this on their homepage.
  2. FAQPage - Questions and answers about your services. AI engines love this format because it matches the question-answer pattern of AI conversations. If someone asks ChatGPT a question you have answered in your FAQ schema, you are much more likely to be cited.
  3. Service - Individual services you offer, with descriptions and pricing if applicable. This helps AI engines match your business to specific queries like “who does dental implants in Naperville” or “estate planning attorney near me.”
  4. Review / AggregateRating - Your review scores and count. AI engines use this to assess quality and make ranking decisions.

Why AI engines care about structured data

AI engines process billions of web pages. Structured data gives them a shortcut. Instead of trying to infer what your business does from your marketing copy, they can read a clean, standardized description in milliseconds.

Without it, AI has to guess. And when AI guesses about your business, it often gets details wrong - wrong location, wrong specialties, wrong hours. Structured data eliminates the guessing.

How to check if you have it

Run your website through Google's Rich Results Test. If it shows no structured data, or only basic Organization schema, you have work to do.

Then run a free AEO scan to see how AI engines currently perceive your business. The gap between what you think your website communicates and what AI actually understands is usually larger than you expect.
